Dosing homemade edibles is a topic that causes a lot of stress and anxiety in a lot of would-be cannabis cooks. So much so that some people give up before ever experiencing how edible cannabis can change their lives.
That is a shame. Because once you dial in what your body needs, cannabis edibles can be a game changer. No matter what kind of effects or relief you are seeking.
The fact that everyone is so different makes dosing homemade edibles so challenging. What works for your spouse, or your friend, may or may not work for you.
But taking the time to figure out what you need is a worthwhile enterprise. Once you know your optimal dose you will then be able to create the exact edibles you need.
How important is getting the proper edibles dosage? I have literally gotten several emails from people who say it saved their lives.
The first time that happened, I thanked the person but said that sounded a bit hyperbolic. They were adamant that it wasn’t. After they explained how much cannabis edibles helped them manage their severe pain levels, helped them to sleep, and helped them stop using opioid drugs, it didn’t sound so hyperbolic after all.

How Do You Calculate the Dose in Homemade Edibles?
The basic formula for calculating THC per serving is straightforward:
(Grams of cannabis × THC% as a decimal × 1000) ÷ number of servings = mg THC per serving
For example: 7 grams of 20% THC cannabis contains 1,400mg of total THC. If your recipe makes 24 brownies, each brownie contains roughly 58mg — far more than a beginner needs. This is why knowing your starting potency and planning your batch size together matters so much.
From there, you work backward: decide how many mg per serving you want, then calculate how much infused butter or oil to use versus regular butter or oil to hit that target. The Cannademy Dosing Calculator ($5) does all of this math automatically — you enter your cannabis details and recipe, and it tells you exactly what to use and what each serving will contain.
Why Are Homemade Edibles So Hard to Dose Consistently?
Even when you know the formula, three variables make homemade edible dosing tricky in practice:
- Unlabeled or estimated cannabis potency — if you don’t know the exact THC%, you’re estimating from the start
- Inconsistent decarboxylation — improperly activating your cannabis before infusion can silently reduce potency by 30–50%
- Uneven mixing — if your infused butter or oil isn’t thoroughly blended into the batter, some pieces will be much stronger than others
The free mini course below walks you through how to account for each of these variables, so your edibles come out consistent every time.
What If My Cannabis Isn’t Lab-Tested?
If your cannabis doesn’t have a lab-tested THC percentage — common with home-grown or gifted cannabis — use 15% as a conservative estimate. Most cannabis flower falls somewhere between 10–20% THC, and starting with a lower estimate protects you from accidentally making edibles that are too strong
If you purchased from a dispensary, the percentage should be on the label. Always use that number in your calculations rather than guessing.
